Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and nothing that I say should be construed as medical in any way. This is just experience that I have had and I am sharing it. It may be useful to someone, but it should not be used in replacement of medical services if needed. As with any exercise program you should consult a physician before doing it.
I have been hiking pretty regularly for several years. Usually day hikes some short some fairly long. I enjoy going for rigorous multi day hikes sometimes though and those have always ended in pain for several days if not weeks. My left knee always had a tendency to to get very sore especially after a lot of down hill hiking. Of course anytime your climbing mountains, half the time is spent going downhill.

I am planning a first hike of the season. I have decided to start with the Bigelow Range Loop just outside of Stratton, ME. It is a 14 mile hike and I will take 2 days to do it. Here is a link to the description of the trail on trailpeak.com. After I do this trail I will be starting the library of GPS maps for Hiking in Maine. I will be carrying a normal load on this hike since it is the first I will be doing this season. On the following hikes I will be filling my pack with more weight to prepare for my hike of the Hundred Mile Wilderness between Monson and Katahdin Peak. I have asked a couple of people to come along but I don't have anything definite yet. So I may be be going alone on this. I haven't come up with a firm date yet but I would like to do it before June 1st. |

I have finished my first hike of the season. It was an overnight stay on the Bigelow Range. It was a two day hike in which I traveled the Firewarden's Trail up to Avery peak then back across to West Peak, The South Horn and down to The Horns Pond to stay the night at the Appalachian Trail lean-to site. I continued the trek back to the parking lot the next morning. For a map of the trail hiked you can go here.

A few years ago my wife and I took our son and nephew and niece to Baxter State Park to do some hiking on a Saturday. It was a very nice day on the second week in June. About 75° and sunny out and the sky was blue as far as you can see. It looked to be a beautiful day for hiking. When we arrived at Baxter my wife and my niece went their own way to Chimney Pond avoiding any trails that were too difficult. My son, nephew and I decided we would go up to do the Knife Edge. So at the head of the Helon Taylor trail we decided to split ways with my wife going one way and me going the other. The hiking was really nice. Of course with two young colts running ahead of me I was getting pretty tired trying to keep up. It was only a day hike and I was the only one with a backpack to carry the food for all three of us so they thought they would give me a run for the money. I had brought some gear because i knew that the weather could change pretty quickly on the mountain. I advised both the boys they should probably carry some extra things just in case but they decided they would be ok with what they had. We traveled pretty quickly to the treeline and as we were coming out into the opening you could see the start of some clouds surrounding the peak ahead.
